But to achieve that, a bit more is needed than simply installing glass.

Why most companies stop at 3–4 metres

In standard terrace glazing, the glass system is supported by an upper and lower profile, which in turn is fixed to the structure. The glass panels slide within the profiles.

The problem arises when the opening gets wider. The wider the opening, the longer the beam that carries the weight of the glass panels. A long beam deflects — and when it deflects more than the glass system allows (for folding panels ±2 mm!), the system no longer functions.

With a standard timber beam, 3–4 metres is the practical limit. Beyond that, you need a special beam.

How we reach 15 metres

Solving large openings requires engineering work:

Steel beam. The advantage of steel beams is high strength with a small cross-section. IPE or HEA profiles can span large openings with minimal deflection. The beam is dimensioned for the specific opening, load, and glass system requirements.

Glued laminated timber beam. Where a timber-like appearance is preferred visually, we use glulam beams. Glulam is stronger and more stable than regular timber and can span larger openings. Dimensioning is based on structural engineering calculations.

Combined solutions. Sometimes the best result is achieved by combining a steel beam with a timber cladding — a strong structure with a beautiful appearance.

It is important to understand that a large-opening solution is not an off-the-shelf product. Every project is unique and requires an individual approach.

What does it cost?

Honestly: more than a standard solution. A special beam, structural calculations, and more complex installation add to the cost. But some clients are willing to pay for it, because the result — a post-free panoramic view of the sea, garden, or nature — cannot be achieved with any other solution.

We always provide an initial cost estimate before any work begins. That way you can decide whether the investment makes sense for you.

When to choose a large opening?

A home by the sea or a lake, where the view is the primary value

A restaurant terrace, where a wide openable wall is part of the experience

A modern-architecture private home, where minimal visual obstructions are important

A winter garden, where you want maximum light and openness

Ask us

If you have been thinking about a large post-free opening — whether it is 6, 8, 10, or 15 metres — get in touch with us. We will honestly tell you what is technically possible, what it requires, and what it costs. Sometimes the answer is: yes, it can be done. And sometimes the answer is: this requires a stronger structure than you expected. Either way, it is better to know beforehand.

ATKA Klaaskoda is the official Malmerk Klaasium dealer in Pärnumaa, Saaremaa, and Hiiumaa.
