But Pärnu is also a coastal city, where the climate tests building materials far more harshly than inland areas. If you are planning to glaze a terrace, it pays to know what to prepare for.

What Makes Pärnu’s Climate Unique

Pärnu sits right on the sea, and that has a direct impact on building materials. Four main factors set Pärnu’s climate apart from inland conditions:

Salt Air

Sea winds carry salt particles kilometres inland. Salt does not corrode the glass itself, but ordinary steel and cheap aluminium alloys suffer. Fixings, profiles, tracks — every metal component must be corrosion-resistant.

The aluminium used in Malmerk Klaasium systems is anodised and powder-coated, which protects against salt. With cheaper imported systems this is not always the case.

Strong Winds

Wind speeds near Pärnu Bay are noticeably higher than inland. This affects terrace glazing in two ways:

Wind load on the glass panel. Stronger wind means greater pressure on the glass. Tempered glass can handle this, but the fixings and profiles must be dimensioned accordingly.

Seal stress. Strong wind compresses seals and probes for gaps. High-quality EPDM seals hold up; cheaper rubber seals harden and crack within a few years.

High Air Humidity

Coastal moisture means more condensation. Terrace glazing develops moisture in the mornings — that is normal. But if drainage is poorly designed, water collects inside the aluminium profile and causes corrosion over time. In quality systems the drainage openings are engineered so that water can escape freely.

UV Radiation

Pärnu is one of Estonia’s sunniest cities — in summer, UV radiation on a terrace is intense. This affects seals and plastic components in particular. Cheap materials turn brittle and lose elasticity within a few years. High-quality UV-stable seals last 15–20 years.

Foundation in Pärnu’s Soil

Pärnu is well known for its sandy soil. Sand is good from a drainage perspective — water does not pool. But sandy soil behaves differently from clay soil during freeze–thaw cycles.

Frost heave risk. If the foundation does not extend below the frost line (approximately 1.2 m in the Pärnu region), the ground can heave in spring and the structure can shift. For terrace glazing — especially frameless folding glass solutions that tolerate only ±2 mm of movement — this is catastrophic.

Coastal area specifics. Close to the sea the groundwater table is higher. This means the foundation’s waterproofing must be thorough. Moisture in a concrete foundation leads to freeze–thaw cycles that break apart the concrete within a few years.

That is why it is important that foundation planning accounts for local conditions from the very start. Building a foundation in Tartu is one thing; building one on the coastal strip of Pärnu is another.

Why a Cheap Imported System Does Not Work in Pärnu

All the factors described above — salt, wind, humidity, UV — are precisely where cheap systems cut corners. Imported systems from China or Turkey are often designed for milder climates:

Aluminium is not anodised — salt corrodes it within a few years

Seals are not UV-stable — they turn brittle

The drainage system is inadequate — moisture collects in the profiles

Fixings are ordinary galvanised sheet-metal screws — they rust in sea air

This does not mean an imported system falls apart immediately. In the first and second year everything looks fine. But from the third or fourth year problems begin to emerge — and by then getting spare parts is difficult.

What Malmerk Klaasium Does Differently

Malmerk Klaasium systems are designed for Estonia’s climate — including coastal regions. Specifically:

Anodised and powder-coated aluminium profiles — corrosion-resistant even in salty air

EPDM seals — UV- and weather-resistant, lasting for decades

Tempered safety glass — handles wind loads and temperature fluctuations

Engineered drainage — moisture does not collect in the profiles

VTT (Finland) tested — similar climate, same requirements

And most importantly — spare parts are available in Estonia. If a seal or track bracket needs replacing ten years from now, you do not have to wait for goods from China.

Klaaskoda’s Pärnu Experience

ATKA Klaaskoda is based in Pärnu and most of our projects are in Pärnumaa. We know the local conditions — the soil, the winds, the construction practices. We have installed terrace glazing in the city centre and along the coast, on new builds and on buildings undergoing renovation.

Our advantage is that we also build the structure ourselves. This means the foundation accounts for Pärnu’s soil and the structure accounts for wind loads from the very beginning — not as an afterthought.

If you are planning terrace glazing in Pärnu, get in touch — we will come and assess the situation.
